Ethnic Resources

This is an extensive list of resources pertaining to black history in Kansas and the surrounding states. Specific information and resource material are available at the Lyon County Historical Archive including original photographs and documents.

The book Black Emporia shows how one town mirrors the nation's experiences through oral histories, references to comparable national events and a 1916 redwork quilt top made by four Black churches.

This tour highlights the Black neighborhoods surrounding Red Rocks, the home of William Allen White and his family, consisting of several generations of the Emporia Gazette editors. The home is a national landmark to be used for educational and research purposes. Maps and directions through the site are included as excerpts from Black Emporia.

The Eastside Community Group of Emporia is an example of history in the making. It maintains a current calendar of events for the community and a journal of group activities. Their Mission Statement includes all persons.

Black Emporia's Kansas Connections lists museums, historical places and events, and websites providing information on issues in education, politics, religion, and psycho/social events.

Primary and secondary source materials, including documentation and linkages, are available for research. Photographs, memorabilia, realia, postcards, dolls, masks, posters, packaged advertising, antique catalogs and book/magazine collections related to the Black experience are included. Emporia and other Kansas relationships are given priority.
